Leadership Forum Series  #Legitimate Leadership

就在第一期直播曼曼说 圆满结束的几个小时后,我们校友直播站迎来了第二期直播:leadership forum series #legitimate leadership。

Ms. Sherry Fu, the director of the UoM China Centre, made a welcome speech, and thanked all alumni for taking time out of their busy schedule. Ms. Sherry Fu then introduced our current student and organizer Mr. Simon Zhou, the guest speaker Wendy Lambouren, who is the author of Legitimate Leadership, as well as the panel discussion facilitator Mr. Timo Lei, the President of SORSA UoM Alumni Association.

Speech

Ms. Wendy Lambouren compared the traditional leadership model ‘Stick & Carrot’ to the ‘Care & Growth’ model, and explained in details what the latter represents. She repeated the word ‘illingly’ many times to emphasize the importance to truly engage the employee who is then truly willing to contribute unconditionally.

Panel Discussion

After a short tea break, the panel discussion began. Mr. Timo Lei, talked about his understanding of leadership with reference to the newly learned ‘Care & Growth’ model. Together with Mr. Simon Zhou, they brought up a heated discussion about the difference between leadership and management.

Q&A Session

During the Q&A session, alumni were actively raising questions and sharing their insights. For example:

  • I can not give each subordinate Care & Growth, how can I manage this situation’;
  • How to manage the down-to-top leadership, or manage the leader’;
  • How can I still give Care & Growth when subordinate under-performs’ and etc.

Thanks all alumni for actively raising questions and sharing their insights. And special thanks to Mr. Simon for sharing his note with us:

1. Traditional vs. Legitimate Leadership

Traditional leadership view: People are the means to the end goal / vision / outcome. There are many ways to get something done.

Legitimate leadership view:  The goal / outcome is the means to grow the person to be an exceptional contributor.

2. Who is the person you work for WILLINGLY and would go the extra mile for?

Someone who:

Listens to me, knows what makes me tick, is empathetic, spends time with me, trusts and respects me, watches my game, knows how to stretch me without breaking me, compassionate, supportive, communicates, explains the mission, vision and values, sets clear expectations, explains my contribution, gives me the tools and resources, gives me time, empowers me, gives me decision making authority, trains me, coaches me, gives me honest feedback, tells me why something is important, stretches and challenges me, is fair, sorts out the slackers, recognises me, sticks up for me when I deserve it, gives me credit when due, has high standards, pushes hard, is positive, is knowledgeable, shares their experience, great communicator, motivating, inspiring and etc.

Someone who:

CARE & GROW

3. To sum up:

i.Legitimacy is granted to leaders who Care & Grow their people. They earn the power to ask people to contribute to be the best that they can be.

ii.Without power there is only Control. Control (sticks and carrots) are what you resort to when you do not have power.

iii.Growth without Care = Lack of Commitment & Loyalty (in bad times they abandon a sinking ship, in good times they go to the highest bidder).

iv.Care and Growth leads to cultivating mature people who give more than they take and are capable of exceptional things.

v.Best of all, Care & Growth does not need a budget or permission, it is a choice that a leader makes to give to, or take from, their people.
