The University of Manchester Global MBA Masterclass
An experienced China Hand: First Time in History by John Darwin Van Fleet

In terms of scale, scope and speed, China’s socioeconomic rise since 1978, the beginning of the era of reform and opening, represents a phenomenon that has never before occurred in human history – it has been, beyond any doubt, a First Time in History (FTIH) phenomenon.

The four primary drivers of the FTIH phenomenon have been:

  • The entrepreneurial courage and innovation of the Chinese people themselves.
  • Effective engagement with global economies, primarily for:

oTech transfer in the broadest sense

oExport markets, taking off in the 1990s and lasting into the last decade

  • A promising baseline – China had relatively high life expectancy in 1980, and higher education levels/literacy rates, compared to other developing economies, especially India, and especially for women.
  • Some wise and strategic decisions by the local, regional and national governments, many of which primarily involved getting out of the way of Chinese entrepreneurship.

Perhaps most powerful expression of FTIH is China’s mobile e-commerce environment, where all these factors come together: a rapidly rising population of Chinese consumers with disposable income, the technology to access and seamlessly pay for global products and services, and the infrastructure to ensure rapid delivery.

On the evening of 24th March (Thursday), join our next Masterclass with Mr. John Darwin Van Fleet, a China Economic Review Columnist, Former Associate Dean of the Marshall School of Business at University of Sothern California for a Manchester MBA Masterclass. Mr. John Darwin Van Fleet has more than 30 years of management and leadership experience in Asia from Japan to China, and insights in corporate strategy, business development, marketing and leadership consulting.

Van Fleet will discuss how FTIH expresses itself dramatically in the rapid ascent of China’s ‘soft’ brands – media, fashion, cosmetics, video games and the like. The ascent of China’s soft brands will confer Joseph Nye’s soft power on China in ways that are hardly imaginable yet, and will therefore and forever change the world – dramatically. We will consider several Chinese soft-brand cases: Shein in ultra-fast fashion, miHoYo in video games and a host of Chinese cosmetics brands, along with TikTok of course. In addition, we’ll review the development of Chinese EV companies, as mobility is increasingly a ‘soft’ brand experience, not just a vehicle purchase.
