Meet the senior education expert
On 28-30 September 2021, the University of Manchester China Centre held the second academic conference for the students of the part-time MA Educational Leadership in Practice course. During the three-day conference, the upgraded China Centre delivered a blended approach by having an enriched physical “classroom” in parallel with a live virtual element connecting directly with the academics in Manchester. Led by the course director, Dr. Alexander McTaggart-Gardner and experienced faculty team, the students discussed cutting-edge topics covering education integration, education equity, education globalization, education policy, active reform and leadership practice. Upon the contemporary issues on education and the new released local educational policies, students exchanged their industry insights and ideas with peers and the academics.
In additional to the academic conference, China Centre invited senior education expert, Ms. Maxine Lu, General Principal of Shanghai Xiehe Education Center. Ms. Lu shared with the students her thoughts on “the Reflection on the Integration of Eastern and Western Education”.
The session was also held in blended format, with face-to-face interaction and livestreaming.
Ms. Lu firstly reviewed the recent national educational policies and their far-reaching impact on schools, parents and the industry. Also, Ms. Lu profoundly interpreted the integrated education by “integration in the past” and “thoughts about future”. In addition, she emphasized the importance of continuous training for teachers. Schools should provide with teachers a platform to improve their skills on interdisciplinary, cross-cultural literacy, big data thinking, and so on. On the other hand, she hopes that parents could be good education partners.
At the end of the sharing, Ms. Lu encouraged the education leaders to be chief resource officers, coordinating all resources and establishing a good ecology to help the students to deal with the dynamic world and future.
After sharing, Ms. Lu answered questions from the students. In response to a teacher’s methodology myth, she inspiringly put forward the saying of "teaching has no fixed method" - educators should not be bound by theories or opinion leaders, but be flexible according to the actual situation. In conclusion, Ms. Lu encouraged the students of MA Educational Leadership in Practice course and future education leaders to take up social responsibilities so as to promote the development of institutions and the entire industry.
The session by Ms. Lu is undoubtly a value-added content of MA Educational Leadership in Practice course. In parallel with a turly “Manchester classroom”, the students have the opportunity to gain more first-hand information from dialoguing with industry leaders during their study journey on the course.
