On Saturday, 18th June 2022, more than 500 University of Manchester alumni, students, staff and their friends joined the 2022 “Manchester Day of Action”, “Purple Wave” Chinese Alumni Online Running Event. This event echoes the theme of “Purple Wave” in Manchester, which can be joined online anytime (18th June 2022) and anywhere. Participants do not have to join the event in person, register online in their places, and record the running information through the app on their mobile phones to complete the corresponding event requirements.
Ms Sherry Fu, director of the UoM China Centre, joined by Centre staff participated in the "Happy Running" in Shanghai, which can raise funds for charitable organization to spread over UoM love. On the day of the event, more than 500 University of Manchester alumni, students, staff and their friends participated in the online running event in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Suzhou and other cities, as well as in Hong Kong, Macao and Taipei. Twelve participants completed the 10-kilometre challenge, 25 participants completed the 5-kilometre challenge, and about hundreds of participants participated in the "Happy Running".

During the event, hundreds of students, alumni, staff and their friends shared the “Manchester Day of Action”, “Purple Wave” Chinese Alumni Online Running Event on social media, including WeChat, Weibo, Linked, Twitter and others. The event has received wide media coverage in China. Dozens of Chinese media, including Phoenix News, reported on the event and gave positive comments. “Manchester Day of Action”, “Purple Wave” Chinese Alumni Online Running Event has created a new way for university’s alumni to fulfill their social responsibilities and enhanced the connection of alumni groups through positive healthy lifestyle during the pandemic.
