On 14th October, 2018, the University of Manchester China Centre Alumni Big Data & Artificial Intelligence Club organized a workshop to learn about marketing cases of Tik Tok, a short video social media app that went viral. Ms. Sherry Fu, Director of University of Manchester China Centre, presented the workshop and delivered keynote speech. Ms. Sherry Fu encouraged the alumni to actively participate and engage in various events and activities organized by University of Manchester China Centre alumni clubs. 32 Alumni from different industries and functions attended the workshop. The workshop is the first case-based learning practice since the club’s establishment in April 2017 in Shanghai, said Mr. Aries Li, a University of Manchester Global MBA alumnus and the club founder.

Ms. Shirley Zhao, a University of Manchester alumna and a Manager at ByteDance, the parent company of Tik Tok, shared with the audience several successful marketing cases on this social media platform. Based on the users’ big data and AI algorithm, Tik Tok has truly become a valuable platform for advisers because it has grasped the heart of its users and maintained a very high adhesiveness.

Mr. Aries Li hosted the event and also shared with the audience the evolution of social media in China. The big picture and environment of China’s social media are challenging, but at the same time with great opportunities. Alumni actively interacted with the host, the speaker as well as each other. Various interesting and provoking questions were asked, and hence answered with insightful answers.

The AI technology has been applied in different scenarios with its applications followed to release. This disruptively changed how we work and even how we live. This is a trend that we can only embrace. Do Tik Tok before marketing gets old!
