On the afternoon of October 14th, the University of Manchester China Centre Alumni Legal Club, in collaboration with the Emory University Chinese Alumni Association, hosted a special sharing session for legal professionals at UoM China Centre. Over twenty legal professionals and alumni from both universities came together to explore and share their insights, efforts, and achievements on the artistic path.
During the event, alumnus from Emory University and lawyer, Li Zhishun, with over twenty years of experience in art collecting, explained the dispersion of Chinese artworks to the world in the early 20th century and the formation of orthodox Chinese art appreciation. This provided attendees with an understanding of the global process of recognizing and comprehending Chinese art.
Mr. Sun Xiaoqing, alumnus of Emory University and lawyer, who had previously performed a piece on his Ming Dynasty guqin collection at the Emory University alumni event in August, showcased his collections in calligraphy, poetry, and painting during this event. He also shared insights from his editorial work on the inaugural issue of "新虞琴刊" . The presentation resonated with the audience, offering a perspective on "expressing emotions within the seven strings and letting go beyond the seven strings."
Alumnus of The University of Manchester and architect, Mr. Lv Weifeng from Yiwu Design, serendipitously joined our sharing session after attending another event at China Centre. He commenced the session with an introduction to his design work for Shanghai Electric Power Hospital. Through his presentation, he guided us into the aesthetic realm of architectural art, sparking an enlightening journey to appreciate the beauty of architecture. The revelation was that architectural art should not be depicted in the symbolic language we often hear; rather, the function of architecture determines its form, which is the fundamental essence of calling it architecture.
Former lawyer and legal consultant, Ms. Mo Mo (Mo Yiqin), shared her experiences in the second half of her life, which involved drama education, original musical production, academic planning and problem-solving, sustaining a flower shop for a month, and her steadfast commitment to a specialty coffee shop for eight years. This prompted a lively discussion among attendees about how to balance and make choices between hobbies and livelihoods, touching on topics of choice, courage, and dilemmas.
Former legal professional Ms. Sun Wei explained her journey in publication design since leaving the legal field. She shared her involvement in several award-winning children's picture book designs, providing the audience with insight into the artistic dedication of children's book authors.
Ms. Sun also brought along her longtime collaborator, lawyer Ji Yufeng, who has published 12 works. While most of his publications are in the genre of suspense novels, and many have been adapted into films and TV series, it's noteworthy that he has a series of children's educational fairy tales titled "Little Fox," a clear manifestation of his love as a father. For Lawyer Ji, writing has become an indispensable part of his life and a record of his journey in this world.
Ms. Sun's presentation also featured Mr. Wei Zixi, an excellent lawyer from the former red-circle law firm who is now a partner at a private cultural and creative industry group. He shared his transformation from a lawyer to a partner in a cultural and creative enterprise, discussing experiences in the conversion of film and television entertainment and insights into the comic industry. He also touched upon efforts in the business sector to support authors' writing.
In conclusion, quoting the diverse and passionate lawyer Zhou Yejun, who has broad interests in painting, photography, music, cross-talk, and talk shows, "Art is the sanctuary of legal professionals. It's our perspective on the world, and it's our way of expressing ourselves." Lawyer Zhou, whose interests span various forms of art, encapsulated the sentiments of everyone present.
The event continued throughout the afternoon, and the captivating photographs were taken by Penny, a lawyer, coffee enthusiast, and lover of musicals. The enthusiasm of legal professionals for art revealed another side beyond their usual professional image. Whether transitioning into the arts, balancing both professions and art, or simply pursuing art as a leisure interest, we hope that everyone can find the motivation to start and persist from this discussion. We also hope that more professionals can discover their aesthetics and life perspectives through art.
