Prof. Helen Gunter

Emeritus Professor, Manchester Institute of Education

My main interest is in the politics of knowledge production within and for education policy. I work with social and political theories of power, particularly in regard to the study of educational leadership. I have led and participated in a range of ESRC and BA funded projects regarding this focus, with a range of monographs being produced. Helen’s scholarly work focuses on the politics of knowledge production within and for education policy. Her research engages critically with social and political theories of power, particularly regarding the study of educational leadership and its implications for policy enactment. Helen has led and contributed to numerous research projects funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the British Academy (BA), with this work resulting in the publication of several influential monographs.

Honorary Research Fellow

Stephen is an Honorary Research Fellow of the University of Manchester, having served until December 2024 as Senior Lecturer in Educational Leadership and Deputy Head of the Manchester Institute of Education. With extensive experience as a teacher, senior leader and education adviser, he has worked collaboratively with schools across the West Midlands and has held governance roles in eight schools for over three decades. Stephen maintains an active scholarly profile while retaining strong professional connections to school leadership practice, underpinned by his dual expertise in academic research and hands-on educational governance.
Prof. Steven Courtney

Prof. Steven Courtney

Professor of Sociology of Educational Leadership

Steven is Professor of Sociology of Education Leadership, researching and writing in areas including system leadership, charisma, depoliticisation and education privatisation, particularly in relation to the identities and practices of those constructed as educational leaders. He is a recipient of the BELMAS Distinguished Service Award and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Teaching and Learning, University of Manchester. Prof Courtney is currently Research Director in the Manchester Institute of Education (MIE), Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Critical Studies in Education, co-convenor of the MIE research and scholarship group, Critical Education Leadership and Policy (CELP) and co-convenor of the BELMAS research group, Critical Education Policy and Leadership Studies (CEPaLS).

Deputy Programme Director, MA Educational Leadership in Practice

Bee is a Senior Lecturer in the Manchester Institute of Education lecturing in educational policy and leadership. Her research interests centre on leadership of multi- academy trusts, education policy, school collaborations and the work of Hannah Arendt. Her most recent publications include a book chapter entitled Leading in a crisis of public truth: how school leaders are navigating lying in politics. Bee was a school leader in Hong Kong and the UK for over twenty years before working at the University of Manchester.

Programme Director, MA Educational Leadership in Practice

​Paul is a Senior Lecturer in the Manchester Institute of Education, The University of Manchester. His research interests concern contemporary forms of educational leadership and management and professional collaboration between educators. Paul has over 17 years’ experience in education research leading on national and international projects and publishing across a number of areas including educational improvement, networking, leadership, management and policy. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Sage journal Management in Education.
