On 10 July, The University of Manchester China Centre buzzed with excitement as the welcome event for the Manchester Global Part-time MBA July 2024 cohort kicked off. The event was graced by Ms. Sherry Fu (on the right), Director of the China Centre, Ms. Catherine Sinclair-Jones (on the middle), Area Director East China at British Council, and Dr. Vlad Andrei Porumb (on the left), Associate Professor (Reader) of Accounting from Alliance Manchester Business School.

New students gathered with enthusiasm, ready to embark on their two-year Global MBA journey. This year’s cohort boasts impressive statistics: an average age of 38, with 15 years of work experience and 8 years of managerial experience on average. The students come from diverse regions including China, Italy, and Denmark. Women constitute 58% of the class, and 98% of the students hold at least a bachelor's degree.

These students come from varied industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, retail, technology, finance, logistics, real estate, energy, and education, with 26% from the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors.

Additionally, 94% hold managerial positions or higher, seeking to transform their careers through enhanced leadership and strategic thinking, becoming global leaders with cross-cultural management skills and social responsibility.

At the beginning of the event, Ms. Sherry Fu delivered a welcome speech, expressing the China Centre's expectations for the students. She highlighted the university's bicentenary, noting its legacy of excellence and innovation in education and research. Fu emphasized the China Centre's commitment to nurturing international talent and supporting cultural, educational, and business exchanges between China and the UK. She encouraged the new students to embrace the MBA program’s core teaching philosophy of "original thinking applied," preparing them to face future challenges with new perspectives and skills.

Ms. Catherine Sinclair-Jones extended her warm congratulations to the new students, underscoring Manchester's significance as a cultural, commercial, and financial hub in the UK. She praised the university's top-tier education and its role in attracting global talent. Sinclair-Jones encouraged the students to leverage their Manchester education to exhibit exceptional leadership and solve global challenges on the international stage.

Dr. Vlad-Andrei Porumb, who traveled from Manchester to Shanghai, inspired the students by emphasizing the unique opportunities they have at the University of Manchester. He urged them to take pride in being part of such a prestigious group and to use their education to make a positive impact on the world.

Following the opening speech, the Student Support Team from China Centre introduced the student support service to the new students, focusing strongly on blended learning. This approach offers flexible online study in parallel with face-to-face interaction to ensure busy working professionals get the most out of their studies.

Student Support Team from UoM China Centre had a Q&A Session with new students. Ms. Penny Zhou, Student Support Manager had an in-depth introduction of online learning platform and academic skills.

As the new cohort mingled and connected, they shared their expectations for the programme. Nazareno Martinelli, an engineer from PAMA (Shanghai), expressed his aspiration to enhance his strategic thinking and broaden his mindset. Ken Liang, Finance Director of Bennu Biotechnology, highlighted the program's international exposure, innovative teaching methods, and career development benefits as key reasons for his choice. Lingwen Xu, Senior Associate Business Development Director at Mercer, who completed her secondary and undergraduate education in the UK, chose the Manchester Global MBA for its unique offering of on-campus classes in China, allowing her to experience authentic British education without leaving the country.

We hope that this new cohort will follow in the impressive path of over 2,000 global MBA alumni, leveraging the university’s global perspective and innovative thinking to excel in their careers and become visionary global leaders.
