As the global climate crisis intensifies, Shanghai has become a vital hub for green innovation and international dialogue. From April 21 to 28, 2025, Shanghai Climate Week 2025 convened over 100 representatives from governments, academia, business, and international organisations to address climate challenges and explore pathways to sustainable development. As one of China’s leading international education institutions, the University of Manchester China Centre actively participated in multiple key events, reaffirming its strong commitment and growing impact in sustainability, social responsibility, and youth empowerment.
On the afternoon of April 21, the opening ceremony of Shanghai Climate Week 2025 took place in the iconic Greenhouse Garden at Expo Cultural Park—a symbolic setting where nature and city, history and modernity, converge. Under the theme "Climate Park · Spring", the event attracted high-level attendees across sectors. Ms. Sherry Fu, Director of the University of Manchester China Centre and Vice Chair of the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai’s Education Committee, was invited to attend as a guest. She also witnessed the official launch of the Youth Climate Conference initiative and the release of the Youth Climate Action Declaration, underscoring the importance of engaging the next generation in climate solutions.
On April 23, the University of Manchester China Centre co-hosted the Asia-Pacific ESG Education Assessment Framework for Leading Business Schools Seminar with Shanghai Green Light-Year at the ESG Industry Park in Suzhou. Sherry Fu delivered a keynote speech titled “The Impact of Net Zero Commitments on Higher Education” and participated in a panel discussion.
Together with the Green Finance Research Institute of Central University of Finance and Economics, the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai, and global partners, UoM China Centre helped spearhead the launch of a regional ESG education evaluation system. Guided by the principles of “China’s Actions, Asia’s Voice, and Global Standards”, the initiative seeks to promote cooperation and excellence in ESG education across top business schools in Asia-Pacific.
On the evening of April 28, Sherry Fu and her team attended the 2025 Sustainability & Innovation Awards Gala. Founded by the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai in 2022, the national-level awards recognise outstanding achievements in sustainable practices across China. Established in 2022 by the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai and formerly named ESG China Awards, this third edition in 2025 continues to recognise the excellence from businesses, organisations and individuals who are at the forefront of China-based sustainable practices. The 2025 Awards partners are the Australian Chamber of Commerce Shanghai and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai.
Ms. Fu was invited to present the Social Impact Award to IHG Hotels & Resorts and Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong. In her speech, she remarked: “The University of Manchester is the first UK university to have social responsibility as its strategic core goal. We ranked 1st in the UK and Europe, and 2nd globally in the 2024 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. Since our China Centre was established in 2008, we have upheld the University’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, creating meaningful regional impact and advancing the integration of sustainability and education.”
Looking ahead, the University of Manchester China Centre will continue to collaborate with government, business, NGOs, and academia to expand the reach of ESG education, empower young talents, and contribute to the advancement of sustainable development in China and the wider Asia-Pacific region. By leveraging education as a powerful driver for change, the Centre is committed to building a more equitable, green, and inclusive future.
